The fact of the matter is that we, as a human race, we live in a different time.
When it boils down to it, every industry is forced to change and exhibit appropriate protocols due to COVID-19. This includes the entertainment industry, which relies on close contact in production to create the content necessary for the big screen. As other industries are being forced to change from their usual ways, so is entertainment. They are implementing protocols like figuring out how to work virtually and realizing that a more major switch to streaming may come sooner.
I was lucky enough to speak with my dad, Steve Mosko, who has been in entertainment since before I was born. He has a great perspective on the happenings during coronavirus and the steps that have to be taken due to the pandemic. The company he works for is Village Roadshow Entertainment Group. Before COVID19, set life was glamorous with many things like different food buffets on set. But now, everything is simplified and restricted because of the protocol that has been put on sets. In order to keep creating content, set life can no longer be as glamourous.
Although the glamour of the set has somewhat been taken away, the only way to keep creating content in entertainment is by making it safe for the people working. Another measure most entertainment companies have had to take is creating a behind the scenes work environment virtually. Personally, I think it has worked out pretty well considering the situation, from the questions I have asked people about working virtually. Even though the actual office work part works, I think part of human nature is to socialize, and a lot of that comes in the workplace. Hopefully, soon, the workplace will go somewhat back to normal, but for now, companies are figuring out how to make it work.
Another thing that came up in my research while asking my father questions is, where the theatrical (theater) business is going. He mentioned that there will be a more dramatic switch to streaming, more dramatic than what was even happening in the past few years with streaming.
In a Medium article it talks about the changes in the industry, they said,
“Even on our smartphones, we can stream any movie or show we like. It is portable, and we can use it while we are traveling or somewhere outside where Television is not available.”
Smartphones have also given a massive push in streaming because it allows people to watch from anywhere. Because of Smartphones and the effect, the pandemic has had on theatrical; Steve thinks a lot of mid-sized movies will be pushed out of theaters and continue going straight to streaming, while the big franchise films will take over the theaters. Because of social distancing, big movies will have to take over more screens, which will fill up more theaters, again pushing out the mid-sized films. In this case, theaters will still “be alive,” but their vibe will completely change.
Although experts can guess what is going to happen specifically in the entertainment business, we do not know what the future holds for this industry or any industry for that matter. As I have gathered, the best thing is for companies to take very well-educated guesses using their logic to aim for the best product that fits in this time period while having to follow these protocols.
