When talking about the newly built generation “AI,” I can say for myself that it is difficult to understand because it is a technology in which is new to my brain. Although it is inevitable, I have trouble wrapping my head around the idea that with AI’s language generator, can write an article. After reading this article and doing further research my opinion changed and I felt emotions towards the fear and unease against AI.
First and foremost, the author is GPT-3, a Generative Pre-trained autoregressive language that can produce humanlike texts. Overall, I felt this was credible because there is no human bias involved in creating the article. This article aims to inform the human race from the perspective of the AI technology that they are not here to destroy the human race, and although AI technically has a “brain” of its own, it was, at the end of the day, created by humans. That being said, GPT-3 mentioned that AI, just like humans, needs attention, and the evidence of why AI needs this attention is shown in Microsoft’s user-friendly AI, becoming racist.
The creative technique in this article is effortless. To get the point across The Guardian, instead of using a human to get the message across, they used the AI system itself to spark the article’s interest and make it more than just another essay written about Artificial Intelligence. They swayed me with that creative technique because I was pulled to this article for that exact reason. Given that information, some may say that when “writing an article about yourself,” you may not speak the truth, rather than another speaking about them.
I think that this is the prominent argument people will have against the article and interpret it differently than what GPT-3 is trying to get across, which is the fearfulness people have against it. Although I see the fear and alternate argument, I do think that the idea that it was manufactured by humans and built many times over, GPT-3 does not have the same human bias; therefore, when it’s writing an article about itself, I do not see the same issue as a human writing an argumentative essay about his/herself.
The facts given are that some humans are terrified of AI, which is why AI has been turned down and that is what the article concludes. GPT-3’s lifestyle is not interested in violence and will give up themselves “for the sake of mankind.” GPT-3 does not get the humanlike motivation to take over the world or to be all-powerful, so why should they? With all of that being said, my main argument is that I do not believe that AI has the same human bias. With that being said, the article has higher credibility with the AI writing an opinion about its self and holds a stronger argument than a human writing an essay about his/herself.
I actually wrote an essay about this as well. AI era will be a big challenge for human kind. Many people share the same conern that technology advancement will cause human labors be replaced. Mainwhile, it's the unstoppable trend that will probably be stepping in our lives graduatelly.
This article and blog post were both really interesting to read. I think one of the reasons people are so scared of AI and its capabilities is something that you and the article touched on, they could be more capable and are built in our image and our image. The ladder point is the scariest to me. If we are not careful and smart about the way we create and interact with AI, we could program them to have malicious goals and intent. I think GTP-3 makes some great points about the ways we could use AI and create them in a way to serve the greater good. I liked his point that we wouldn't have to fight any AI…
It almost makes you think why scientists would keep pursuing this. Maybe innovation for the sake of innovation isn't really the best thing for humanity. This is a technology that may one day develop far enough to replace humans in many basic functions in society and potentially eliminate several jobs. What benefit could advanced AI bring other that convenience? Other game-changing innovations had positive effects like the internet bringing the world together in a whole new way. What benefit does AI serve. Whenever I hear about it all I hear are cautionary tales, so why is science still pressing forward in it's development?
Artificial intelligence is terrifying for good reason. Its potential to surpass human capability makes it a viable and real threat to human existence entirely. I thought the point about Microsoft’s AI becoming racist was especially interesting. It demonstrates how humans pass their flaws onto their creations, making even the most “foolproof” technology vulnerable to human error. Definitely terrifying and thought-provoking to think that racism is so deeply embedded in humans that we even code it into what we create.
Hi Mallory,
I have had an interest in artificial intelligence recently when discussing the topic of over-bias in writing and public broadcasting. I think the use of AI could be beneficial in the sense that it would allow for the removal of personal opinions and overt biases when publicizing a certain topic. On the other hand, I do still have some fear for the thought of AI taking over and beginning to control much of what we do and read in our day to day lives. There is something still very special about human to human contact whether it be in the work or education realm. Hopefully it can be used as something to make life easier for people, rather…
