Coming Out in Modern America...

Updated: May 3, 2021

"There's nothing wrong with you. There's a lot wrong with the world you live in" — Cris Colfer

As a young woman in contemporary society, I've done my best to educate myself on subjects that don't necessarily apply to me, giving me more awareness about groups of people less understood. A subject I've wanted to write on for a while now is the "coming out" process for LGBTQ+ youth. It used to be that proclaiming yourself as openly gay in America was more than frowned upon; it meant you needed psychiatric help. Yet, the century we are currently in has given communities their voice to stand up for themselves like never before. I am an ally, as I have many friends who identify within the LGBTQ+ community.

Many of my friends who have come out in recent years of their adulthood, at first, felt ashamed to step out into the world and proclaim their true self and sexuality. This is unfair and, frankly, disgusting.

In a free country like the US, there should not be limitations on what one's self-identity should be; that would strip the ideals of a free society, which I do not believe we live in. If America were a free society, people would have no fear of judgment when coming to terms with their sexuality and identity.

The problem is as followed; our society has put these agendas of problematic ideals towards the LGBTQ+ community within the building blocks, so the reverse of these judgmental ideals in society is more complicated than a flip of a switch. I question many times a day why people cannot just go about their own lives and not worry about how other people identify, and then I realize it has been engraved in our society as so. Although this is true, I see much progress being made, and there will be progress continue to be made as people within the LGBTQ+ community, and their allies stand up for the wrongness that has been done.

I do not want those who are ashamed to feel ashamed or looked down upon because of who they are. I and others around me will continue to fight to make things right. Let that rainbow flag ring!!!!
